Abstract

The project "Descomplicando ISTs," carried out during the "Experiência Extensionista" course at Universidade Tiradentes, aimed to raise awareness about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and self-care, demystifying prejudices and encouraging prevention and treatment. STIs are still a taboo in society, leading to misinformation and an increase in cases. Consequently, the lack of knowledge can result in risky behaviors and the spread of infections. The target audience was high school students from the 2nd year of a public school located in Aracaju/SE. The proposal was to use the school environment as a strategic space for education, promoting accessible and interactive knowledge about sexual health, in alignment with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and UNAIDS. As an intervention, a discussion circle was held, divided into prevention, treatment, and contraceptive methods. As a result, the project led to a significant increase in the students' knowledge about STIs, positive changes in their perceptions and prevention practices, and stimulated a culture of self-care among the adolescents.
