The importance of intimate health in the prevention of STIs at the USF José Machado de Souza

Abstract

Intimate health is an essential element of physical, mental, and social well-being, particularly in the context of preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In Brazil, the fight against STIs still faces taboos, sociocultural barriers, and informational deficits, reinforcing the importance of health education at the primary care level. This study was carried out by medical students at the Family Health Unit (USF) José Machado de Souza, in Aracaju, Sergipe, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of intimate hygiene as a preventive measure against STIs. The methodology was divided into two main stages: the training of Community Health Agents and educational activities with SUS users. The interventions included theoretical presentations, interactive dynamics, and awareness activities. The results showed that 100% of the participants acknowledged the relationship between intimate health and STI prevention and expressed the intention to adopt new self-care habits, as well as to share the knowledge acquired. Most participants rated the activity with the highest score, highlighting the positive impact of the approach used. The study reinforces the strategic role of Health Units and educational actions as tools to expand access to information, promote community empowerment, and reduce STI incidence.
