Abstract
Aldicarb is responsible for the growing risk of poisoning through accidental exposure or self-extermination, due to its easy accessibility. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of cases of acute exposure to aldicarb in attempted suicide in the state of Ceará. This is a documentary, retrospective study with a quantitative approach. It was carried out at a reference center in the state of Ceará, Brazil, based on the medical records of all aldicarb poisonings that occurred between 2016 and 2020. Data was collected using reports from the Brazilian Poisoning Data System of the Brazilian Association of Toxicological Information and Assistance Centers, with the aid of electronic medical records. The results are shown as absolute (n) and relative (%) frequencies. A total of 144 cases were recorded. Suicide attempts accounted for 78% (n=112) of the cases, with a prevalence of males aged between 20 and 29 with 15% (n=21) of the cases. The highest incidence of registered cases was in the capital, Fortaleza, with 63% (n=92). There was a predominance of mild cases of poisoning. There were high rates of suicide attempts due to aldicarb poisoning involving adults in the state of Ceará, mainly males. Further research is needed to expand knowledge on this subject.
