Abstract
Schistosomiasis mansoni is one of the most prevalent tropical diseases in the world. In Brazil, the highest rates are recorded in Northeast region, with endemic foci in Maranhão State, which are monitored by the Schistosomiasis Control Program. In this study, we sought to analyze the epidemiological situation of schistosomiasis mansoni in Bequimão, a municipality in Baixada Ocidental Maranhense, in the period from 2015 to 2021. This is a cross-sectional study, whose data were collected through the Information System of the Schistosomiasis Control Program of the Maranhão State. For data analysis, frequency of the locations investigated, tests performed, percentage of positivity, treatment, execution phase, type of investigation, death, sex and age group were verified. The analyzes were processed using Bioestat 5.3 software. The results showed the existence of negative correlation between the number of exams performed and percentage of positivity. Medication adherence was above target. The estimated mortality rate was 4.70 per 100 thousand inhabitants. A higher frequency of male cases aged between 15 and 49 years was observed. The intensity of infection remained low throughout the period, however, the presence of cases with a high parasite load was noted. This study found that the municipality has areas of low, medium and high endemicity, and that have flaws in the execution of disease control program.
